What is Deep Cycle Battery

Description

Deep cycle battery is a special type of storage battery whose core function is to be able to release most of the charge repeatedly without rapid damage, unlike ordinary batteries (such as car startup batteries), it is not designed to burst into a large current instantaneously, but to support the stable operation of the device for a long time.

1.Key features

1.1 Deep discharge capacity

Ordinary batteries can usually only discharge to 20% of the total capacity (such as 100Ah batteries can only use 20Ah), otherwise it will shorten the life, the deep cycle battery can be discharged multiple times to 80% of the total capacity (that is, the 100Ah battery can be used to only 20Ah), and still maintain normal performance.

1.2 Long cycle life

The charge and discharge times of ordinary batteries are about 300-1000 times, while the design life of deep cycle batteries can reach 1000-2000 times, take the lead acid as example, this means that it can be used repeatedly for longer periods of time, reducing the frequency of replacement.

1.3 Structure optimization

Thicker plate: The internal metal plate (such as the lead-calcium alloy plate of the lead-acid battery) is thicker, the active material (the material involved in the chemical reaction) is denser, and can withstand the loss caused by multiple charges and discharges.

Anti-vulcanization design: During deep discharge, non-conductive lead sulfate crystals (similar to rust) are easily generated on the surface of the plate, and the deep cycle battery delays this process and prolongs its service life through material improvement and process optimization.

2.Common types

2.1 Lead acid deep cycle battery

Advantages: mature technology, low cost, suitable for large current discharge (such as drive motor), disadvantages: large weight, the need for regular maintenance (supplement electrolyte), low temperature environment performance decline.

2.2 Lithium ion deep cycle battery

Advantages: small size, light weight, high charging efficiency (loss of about 5%), long cycle life, disadvantages: high price, need to be equipped with protection circuit to prevent overcharge or overdischarge.

2.3 Nickel iron battery

Advantages: extreme temperature tolerance (-40 ° C to 60 ° C), extremely long life (up to 20 years), disadvantages: high self-discharge rate (about 30% per month), low energy density (less storage power for the same volume).

3.Application scenario

Equipment or systems that require a continuous and stable power supply, such as:

Energy storage devices for solar and wind power generation systems.

Electric vehicles (e.g. golf carts, electric wheelchairs).

Power supply for off-grid homes or motorhomes.

Backup power for industrial equipment.

Scenarios that require high power supply continuity, such as communication base stations and medical equipment.

4.Conclusion

Through its unique physical structure and chemical formula, deep cycle battery solve the problem that ordinary batteries cannot discharge deeply for a long time, and become an important choice in the field of energy storage. Reasonable use and maintenance can significantly extend its service life and ensure stable operation of the equipment.
