Lithium Battery Energy Storage Advantage and Disadvantage
The lithium battery energy storage system takes the lithium battery as the core, and cooperates with the battery management system and energy management system to realize the storage and release of electric energy,the advantages and disadvantages are as follows,we can know what is the advantage and disadvantage for using lithium battery in our energy storage sytem.
1.Advantage
1.High energy density
Compared to other traditional batteries, lithium batteries can store more power per unit in same volume or weight, which makes the device small and lightweight, and the battery life can be significantly improved,for example, in energy storage system it can save the installation space,also convenient for installer.
2.Long Cycle Life
Under normal use and maintenance conditions,lithium batteries have more charging and discharging cycles, generally up to 3000 – 8000 times,and some high-quality products are even more,this means that users don’t need to replace the battery frequently,it can reduce the cost of use and the waste of resources.
3.High Efficiency
The energy loss in the process of charging and discharging is relatively small,and the charging and discharging efficiency can usually reach more than 90%,which can store and release electrical energy more effectively,reducing the waste of energy in the storage process
4.Low Self Discharge
It consumes their own power slowly when not in use,with a monthly self-discharge rate of only 5% to 10%,which allows the battery to retain more power even if it is left for a long time, and can be put into work quickly when it needs to be used
5.Environmentally friendly
Unlike some traditional battery that contain heavy metals and harmful substances,lithium battery do not contain toxic heavy metals such as mercury,cadmium,lead,relatively pollution to the environment, which meets the requirements of environmental protection.
6.Flexible design
The shape and size can be customized according to different application scenarios and equipment needs,can flexibly adapt to various spatial layouts and requirements,providing greater freedom for product design.
2.Disadvantage
1.The Higher cost
The cost of raw materials, production process requirements,and investment in technology research and development of batteries are high,resulting in relatively high initial acquisition costs,to a certain extent,this limits large-scale application,especially for cost-sensitive projects,and cost has become an important factor hindering the promotion of lithium battery energy storage system.
2.Safety Problem
Although with the development of technology,the safety of lithium battery has been greatly improved,but in extreme or abnormal situations such as high temperature,overcharge,overdischarge,short circuit, etc,safety accidents such as thermal runaway,fire and even explosion may still occur,this places high demands on the battery management system and the environment in which it is used
3.Poor low-temperature performance
In the low temperature environment,the chemical reaction rate inside will slow down,the viscosity of the electrolyte increases,resulting increase in the internal resistance of the battery,decrease in the usable capacity,and decrease in the charging and discharging performance.
4.Difficulty for recycle
Although it’s relatively environmentally friendly,but a large number of retired lithium battery can still cause pollution to the environment if they are not disposed of properly,at present, the lithium battery recycling system is not perfect,the recycling technology needs to be further improved,how to efficiently and environmentally protect the recycling of valuable metals and materials in lithium battery is an urgent problem to be solved.
